Toledo was founded by United States citizens in 1833 on the west bank of the Maumee River placing the city in the state of Ohio. Originally Toledo was incorporated as part of Monroe County, Michigan Territory. It was re-founded by Ohio in 1837, after conclusion of the Toledo War.
Toledo is 40 miles south of Detroit Michigan and is connected by Interstate 75 and Rt 23.
After construction of the Miami and Erie Canal connecting Toledo with the Ohio River, the city grew quickly. In addition Toledo also benefited from its position on the railway line between New York City and Chicago.
